Nigerian Afrobeat Co-founder Is Dead! ~ Omonaijablog



Few weeks after the death of Pa Kasumu, a veteran Nollywood actor, Fela Anikulapo Kuti's ex-drummer, composer and songwriter, Tony Oladipo Allen, is now dead. 
Allen died in Paris, France, on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Allen was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70 from 1968 to 1979, and is one of the primary co-founders of the genre of Afrobeat music.

Announcing his demise, a veteran musician, broadcaster and writer, Skidd Ikemefuna, wrote on his social media handle, " RIP Tony Allen. You introduced the unique drum beat which has become the identity and foundation of Afro Beat Music Globally.

Shalom."
Allen was born in Lagos in 1940 and was regarded as one of the founders of Afrobeat, he was aged 80 years.

Fela once stated that, "Without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat." Attesting to his professionalism and dedication to the growth of Afrobeat in this part of the world.

A personal coach, Allen began playing a drum kit at the age of 18, while working as an engineer for a Nigerian radio station. He was influenced by music his father listened to Jùjú, a popular Yoruba music from the 1940s, but also American jazz, and the growing highlife scene in Nigeria and Ghana.

He had also been described by Brian Eno as "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived."

Allen has now joined the increasing lists of notable Nigerian entertainers that has died in 2020.
